In Indy, outsiders can move to the city and rapidly make friends and contacts, and to get integrated into civic networks. The stereotype of some Southern cities is that who your daddy was, etc. I’ve also heard reports of similar things about Cleveland, where people who come there have trouble making new friends and connections. If you weren’t born there, in a sense you’re always something of an outsider. The Midwest river cities like Cincinnati, Louisville, and St. Many cities have very insular cultures that are difficult to penetrate. Indianapolis has a very open social structure. They are comparisons versus what I see in other cities.ġ. I’m reposting ten of my observations here. Keep in mind that many of these points are relative, not absolute. A journalist recently interviewed me about Indianapolis and asked about some of the things that make that city’s culture distinct. But a big chunk of it is culture.Įvery city has its own culture.
